What is Construction Consulting?
According to The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition, a consultant is defined as “one who gives expert or professional advice.” In that regard, a construction consultant is one who give expert or professional advice in construction matters. Ideally a construction consultant is therefore someone that is either an expert or professional in the construction industry. Steve Hill, president of SHCC, Inc., is both.
Barron’s defines a consultant as an “individual or organization providing professional advice to an organization for a fee.” While this is true, a good consultant saves the client time and money. That is the goal that SHCC is driven by.
Based on experience from many years of remediation and investigation, the effective consultant can identify the causes of a problem easier than those only familiar with original construction. Another advantage of a skilled professional investigator is the manner in which information is gathered. A secondary factor in construction defects or deferred maintenance is finding a way to pay for the repairs. This is usually accomplished by making a claim to an insurance company or through litigation. If the documentation (or “paper trail”) is not provided in a manner that is acceptable or credible to the other parties, the claim or suit is denied. In other words, if you don’t know how an insurance adjuster or lawyer thinks, you can’t anticipate the questions or requirements they are going to have.
The mission statement for SHCC is:
Practical solutions to building performance issues.
This means providing answers that are pragmatic and efficient. Solutions that do not waste time or money, but achieve results based on fact and the knowledge that comes with thirty-five years of experience in construction.
